Cowansville’s landfill stores 75 000 tons of waste per year.

Cowansville’s landfill places 75 000 tons of waste per year.

The Brome-Missisquoi Intermunicipal Waste Management Board (RIGMRBM) selected the WAGABOX® solution to produce renewable natural gas (RNG, also known as biomethane) at the Cowansville landfill (Québec, Canada).

Waga Energy will purchase the landfill gas from the RIGMRBM for at least 20 years, and transform it into a grid-quality RNG through its exclusive WAGABOX® gas treatment technology.

Waga Energy will finance the construction of the WAGABOX® unit, and its connection to the gas grid. The unit will be built in Quebec by the Canadian subsidiary of Waga Energy. Only the cryogenic distillation module will be manufactured in Grenoble, France, and shipped overseas. Waga Energy will operate and maintain the unit and generate revenue by selling RNG to a gas utility.

1,750 households supplied with RNG

The WAGABOX® unit in Cowansville will be commissioned in 2023. It will treat 1,000  m3/h of landfill gas and inject 30 GWh of biomethane per year into the gas grid, corresponding to the energy consumption of 1,750  Quebec households. It will avoid the emission of 5,000 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere.

The RIGMRBM is a municipal body administered by four towns in the regional county municipality (RCM) of Brome-Missisquoi: Bedford, Cowansville, Dunham and Farnham. The Cowansville landfill site treats 75,000  tons of waste per year and currently, the landfill gas is captured and burned in a flare stack to avoid direct emissions of methane into the atmosphere.

A large capacity WAGABOX® unit is already under construction to equip the Saint-Étienne-des-Grès landfill.

David Rumbsy, Managing Director of RIGMRBM: « Several experts were consulted to ensure that we had the best technology for our site. After a comprehensive due diligence was carried out, our choice fell on the company that offered the best technology and, above all, had the most positive impact on the environment. »

Mathieu Lefebvre, CEO and co-founder of Waga Energy: « We are happy to be able to help the RIGMRBM to improve its environmental practices through our innovative gas recovery technology. This new contract in Quebec is the result of the significant work we committed over the past two years to deploy our solution in North America and help move the energy transition forward. Our investor-operator model involves a long-term commitment and requires the establishment of local industrial capacities to build and operate our units »
