Cowansville’s landfill places 75 000 tons of waste per year.
The Brome-Missisquoi Intermunicipal Waste Management Board (RIGMRBM) selected the WAGABOX® solution to produce renewable natural gas (RNG, also known as biomethane) at the Cowansville landfill (Québec, Canada).
Waga Energy will purchase the landfill gas from the RIGMRBM for at least 20 years, and transform it into a grid-quality RNG through its exclusive WAGABOX® gas treatment technology.
Waga Energy will finance the construction of the WAGABOX® unit, and its connection to the gas grid. The unit will be built in Quebec by the Canadian subsidiary of Waga Energy. Only the cryogenic distillation module will be manufactured in Grenoble, France, and shipped overseas. Waga Energy will operate and maintain the unit and generate revenue by selling RNG to a gas utility.
1,750 households supplied with RNG
The WAGABOX® unit in Cowansville will be commissioned in 2023. It will treat 1,000 m3/h of landfill gas and inject 30 GWh of biomethane per year into the gas grid, corresponding to the energy consumption of 1,750 Quebec households. It will avoid the emission of 5,000 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere.
The RIGMRBM is a municipal body administered by four towns in the regional county municipality (RCM) of Brome-Missisquoi: Bedford, Cowansville, Dunham and Farnham. The Cowansville landfill site treats 75,000 tons of waste per year and currently, the landfill gas is captured and burned in a flare stack to avoid direct emissions of methane into the atmosphere.
A large capacity WAGABOX® unit is already under construction to equip the Saint-Étienne-des-Grès landfill.
