Waga Energy expands its presence in California with a third WAGABOX® unit

17 January 2025

Waga Energy is proud to announce a new contract with Kern County to design, build, operate, and maintain a renewable natural gas (RNG) production unit at Bena Landfill in Bakersfield, California. Under a 20-year offtake agreement, the University of California will purchase the RNG produced, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, renewable energy, and combating climate change.

Once up and running, the WAGABOX® unit at Bena Landfill will be the third in California and the 13th in the United States. This project strengthens Waga Energy’s leadership in landfill gas recovery and RNG production, while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Once operational, the WAGABOX® unit will produce more than 160 GWh of RNG per year over the term of the agreement, delivering pipeline-quality gas to the local Kinder Morgan pipeline and providing the community with a reliable and renewable source of energy. This project will offset approximately 30,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually and improve the region’s air quality. This reduction is equivalent to the emissions generated by heating 12,000 homes per year.

“This agreement supports advancing environmental stewardship at our Bena Landfill, while creating value for our community.”

Lisa Shreder, Kern County Public Works Assistant Director

“We are thrilled to develop a third WAGABOX® unit in California, a state with a strong decarbonization ambition, and with immense potential for our solution. This partnership with Kern County Public Works and the University of California marks an important milestone in our development. Supplying RNG produced in California for local use by the UC highlights the success of public-private collaboration in advancing the state’s ambitious decarbonization goals.”
