SMD3 and Waga Energy launch Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production project in South-West France

8 Novembre 2024

The Dordogne Departmental Waste Syndicate (Syndicat Mixte Départemental des Déchets de la Dordogne – SMD3) and Waga Energy have announced the launch of a Renewable Natural Gas production project at a landfill site in Saint-Laurent-des-Hommes. As part of this collaboration, Waga Energy will install its WAGABOX® unit, a patented technology that converts biogas from buried waste into RNG, a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas.

The WAGABOX® unit will produce an average of 57,000 mmbtu (16.7 GWh) of RNG per year, equivalent to the energy consumption of around 3,000 residents. This RNG will be injected directly into the natural gas distribution network, supplying local households and businesses. Scheduled for commissioning in 2027, the project will reduce CO2 emissions by 4,000 tons per year, contributing to the fight against climate change.

Currently, the biogas produced on-site is converted into electricity. By upgrading it to RNG, the project will offer higher energy efficiency and provide renewable energy transported through existing gas infrastructures. This initiative will also support decarbonization in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as industry and transportation, while enhancing regional energy sovereignty.

“Jointly developed with Waga Energy, this innovative project marks a new step forward in Dordogne’s energy transition. By upgrading the energy produced from the waste of Périgord’s residents to renewable natural gas, we are delivering clean and local energy while reducing our fossil fuel dependency and protecting the planet.”

Pascal Protano, President, SMD3.

“This initiative with SMD3 reflects our shared commitment to supporting the energy transition. We are thrilled to be able to provide the people of Dordogne with a pioneering solution that converts methane into renewable natural gas – a local and renewable energy source offering a genuine alternative to fossil-based gas.”
