OCI Global, a global leader in the production of nitrogen, methanol, and hydrogen, has formed a strategic partnership with Waga Energy to produce biomethane at the Beaumont, Texas landfill site. Having been established in the Golden Triangle (Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange) since 2010, OCI Global continues its commitment to local sustainable development. The biomethane project, carried out in collaboration with Waga Energy and the municipality of Beaumont, aligns with this commitment, aiming to support OCI Global’s green methanol production.
The project will involve installing a system to capture gases emitted from the decomposition of organic waste. These gases will then be converted into biomethane by a WAGABOX® unit and injected into the local gas network. This initiative is expected to create around twenty jobs during the construction phase, adding to the 300 jobs already generated by OCI Global in the region, and will provide additional revenue to the city once the unit is operational. The WAGABOX® unit will be constructed and operated by Waga Energy, while OCI Global will own the biomethane production. This innovative business model in the United States could potentially be replicated at other landfill sites.
The unit is scheduled to be operational by 2025, and it will prevent the emission of 27,440 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, which is equal to the emissions from 2.8 million gallons of gasoline per year , according to the standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Another significant environmental benefit is the reduction of methane emissions, a particularly potent greenhouse gas.
“We’re excited about this partnership with Waga Energy and the City of Beaumont, which will not only secure sustainably sourced RNG for OCI HyFuels, but also assist the City in abating significant GHG emissions. We’re proud that our first RNG investment is in Beaumont, where we have a 15-year history of investment and employment, and we look forward to partnering with other local landfills to assist in their decarbonization goals and create meaningful value for these communities.”
Bashir Lebada, CEO OCI Methanol and HyFuels.
“We are thrilled to partner with OCI Global, a visionary leader in low carbon solutions, and a pioneer in the use of renewable natural gas for decarbonizing feedstock industries. This project at the City of Beaumont Landfill is innovative not only because of the cutting-edge technology and utilization of cryogenics, but also for the transformative business model we’re introducing to OCI Global as a provider of landfill gas upgrading services.”
