Lac-Saint-Jean RWM and Waga Energy Sign a Renewable Natural Gas Project in Quebec

The Régie des matières résiduelles du Lac-Saint-Jean (RWM) and Waga Energy have announced the signing of an agreement to implement an innovative RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) production project at the Hébertville-Station engineered landfill site (ELS).

Waga Energy will collaborate with the RWM, which manages the ELS serving 50 municipalities and the Mashteuiatsh community. This partnership includes the construction and operation of a WAGABOX® unit, capable of producing up to 188, 000 MMBtu/year of RNG —enough to power more than 2,280 homes. By capturing and upgrading biogas, the project will prevent the emission of 10,000 tons of CO₂ eq annually, contributing to the energy transition.

The Hébertville-Station ELS receives up to 203,500 tons of waste per year. Currently, its biogas is captured and flared. Starting in 2026, the WAGABOX® unit will purify this biogas and inject it into the gas grid, providing a renewable alternative to fossil natural gas for households and businesses in the region.

The project’s feasibility study was funded with CA$300,000 (€200,000) by the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy through the Renewable Natural Gas Production Support Program. This program is financed by the Electrification and Climate Change Fund, exclusively dedicated to combating climate change and implementing the measures outlined in the Green Economy Plan 2030. This initiative aligns with the provincial strategy to integrate 10% renewable natural gas into the natural gas grid by 2030.

This partnership represents Waga Energy’s fourth project in Quebec. Three WAGABOX® units are already operational in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Cowansville, and Chicoutimi, with a fifth under construction in British Columbia. This new initiative reaffirms Waga Energy’s commitment to developing sustainable waste management solutions and renewable energy production in Canada.
