Waga Energy and Decatur Hills Landfill, part of the family-owned waste management group Best Way Disposal, have commissioned a new biomethane production unit in Greensburg, Indiana.
Using Waga Energy’s patented WAGABOX® technology, the facility upgrades landfill gas into pipeline-quality biomethane. Designed to process up to 1,000 scfm of raw biogas, the unit can produce approximately 60 GWh of biomethane per year.
The biomethane produced on-site is injected directly into the local gas grid through a 3-kilometer pipeline connection financed by Waga Energy and Decatur Hills Landfill. By replacing fossil natural gas, the project is expected to avoid more than 15,800 metric tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions per year, according to estimates based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Landfill Gas Energy Benefits Calculator.
The facility is Waga Energy’s eighth biomethane production unit in operation in the United States and marks a new step in the company’s continued growth across North America.
“Decatur Hills is very excited to be part of this great clean energy project. It has taken a long time to find the right partner, and we think that Waga Energy has some unique solutions that will bring this resource from the landfill to the energy grid as a sustainable, renewable fuel.”
Curt Publow, Environmental Compliance Manager
“For decades, our family has believed in operating our landfills responsibly and continually investing in better solutions. We are proud to partner with Waga Energy to transform landfill gas into a valuable renewable energy resource, creating lasting environmental benefits for the communities we serve.”
Jessica Routley, CEO of Best Way Disposal
“We are proud to bring this new unit — our eighth in operation in the United States — online alongside Decatur Hills Landfill. Their commitment, rigor, and long-term vision made this project a success, and they have been an exemplary partner throughout. Thanks to this joint effort, the gas spontaneously produced by the Decatur Hills site, until now flared, will supply the local community with clean, local and renewable energy.”
