Québec Government Support for the Hébertville-Station RNG Project

15 January 2026

The Québec Government is providing CAD $15 million in financial support to Waga Energy Canada for the construction of a renewable natural gas (RNG) production unit at the technical landfill site operated by the Régie des matières résiduelles du Lac-Saint-Jean (RMR) in Hébertville-Station, in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

An RNG Project Supporting Québec’s Climate Objectives

This support represents a key milestone in the implementation of the project, which was signed in November 2024 and is now entering its construction phase. The funding comes from the Electrification and Climate Change Fund and is part of the 2025–2030 Implementation Plan of the 2030 Green Economy Plan, which aims to integrate 10% RNG into Québec’s gas network by 2030.

Using WAGABOX® technology, the facility will produce up to 200,000 GJ per year (approximately 55 GWh), equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 2,900 Québec households, and will help avoid 9,400 tonnes of CO₂e per year.

A Circular Economy Project for Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean

Operated by the RMR, the Hébertville-Station landfill site serves 50 municipalities and receives 203,500 tonnes of waste per year. The biogas is currently flared. Thanks to the WAGABOX® unit, it will now be purified and upgraded into RNG, then injected into Énergir’s gas network—representing a major circular economy project supporting the energy transition in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.

This is Waga Energy’s fourth RNG project in Québec. Three WAGABOX® units are already in operation in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Cowansville, and Chicoutimi. A fifth unit is operating in British Columbia, on Vancouver Island.

“I would like to thank Minister Éric Girard for awarding this financial aid to the project we are carrying out with Waste Management Authority of Lac-Saint-Jean. This renewed confidence from the government proves that the innovative technology of WAGABOX® units is attractive and that our commitment to energy transition remains as strong as ever.
