Waga Energy and Arcavi start up a WAGABOX® unit

6 May 2024

Arcavi, a semi-public company responsible for waste management in the Ardennes department, and Waga Energy commissioned a new production unit on April 26, 2024 at the Éteignères landfill site (Installation de Valorisation et d’Élimination des déchets Ardennais – IVEDA) in northeastern France. This facility uses Waga Energy’s patented WAGABOX® technology to produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from the gas emitted naturally by the waste landfilled on the site.

The RNG produced is injected directly into the distribution network to supply energy to homes and businesses in the area.

The WAGABOX® unit produces around 85,300 mmBtu/year (25 GWh) of biomethane a year to supply over 2,500 homes, reducing emissions by around 3,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year.

This project, supported by a €311,260 grant from the Agence de la Transition Écologique (Ademe) as part of the i-Nov innovation competition funded by the France 2030 plan, aims to improve the plant’s energy efficiency. This initiative is part of the drive to promote renewable and local energies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, particularly in the transport, industry and district heating sectors.

The commissioning of this unit marks a significant step in the region’s energy transition, helping to increase the energy efficiency of the Éteignières site while providing a clean, sustainable energy source for years to come.

“Using waste as a resource is a concrete opportunity to develop a green and sustainable energy source for the Ardennes region. We’re very excited to be working with our new partner, Waga Energy, to strengthen the site’s existing biogas recovery on a long-term basis.

Marc Wathy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Arcavi.

“Thanks to the WAGABOX® technology, the IVEDA site at Éteignières has become a RNG producer, supplying the region with green, local and sustainable energy. We’re delighted to be working hand in hand with Arcavi to help make the Ardennes region greener.”

Mathieu Lefebvre, Chief Executive Officer of Waga Energy.
