and various\u00a0<\/span><strong>volatile organic compounds <\/strong><span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW172496010 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW172496010 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW172496010 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW172496010 BCX8\">released from waste materials<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_2 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h3 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">1) The biogas produced spontaneously by the biological decomposition of organic matter<\/h3><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Non-hazardous waste disposed of in a landfill contains a significant amount of organic matter<\/strong>, in the form of food waste, green waste, paper, cardboard, leather, wood, etc. It represents about 50% of overall tonnage and still 25% when waste is sorted upstream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Inside the cells, the organic matter is degraded by various micro-organisms which thrive in humid and oxygen-deprived environments. <span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\">Among them are methanogenic micro-organisms, which produce methane (CH<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Subscript SCXW160080934 BCX8\" data-fontsize=\"12\">4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\">), the main <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\">component<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160080934 BCX8\"> of biogas, together with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\">carbon dioxide (CO<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\">). Gas collection<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"> and treatment<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"> also <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW79340425 BCX8\">help<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"> limit potential health impacts associated with exposure to landfill gas and trace compounds, while reducing <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\">odor nuisance, primarily caused by hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun EmptyTextRun SCXW79340425 BCX8\"><\/span><span class=\"EOP TrackedChange SCXW79340425 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A standard LFG collection system consists of a blower connected to a network of wells installed vertically and\/or horizontally within the waste mass. Areas with higher cover permeability, particularly side slopes and the interfaces between the cover system and gas extraction infrastructure, are often significant pathways for air ingress.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW139533035 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW139533035 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW139533035 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139533035 BCX8\"> The amount of air present in the LFG therefore depends on blower settings, the integrity of the collection network, the quality of seals and connections, and the permeability of the landfill cover.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_cta_4 et_pb_promo et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module post-text\"><div class=\"et_pb_promo_description\"><h3 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">3) Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)<\/h3><div class=\"et_pb_promo_content\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW263414622 BCX8\"><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW263414622 BCX8\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW263414622 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263414622 BCX8\">The collection system also captures trace compounds released from the waste, including substances originating from paints, solvents, detergents, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW263414622 BCX8\">cosmetics,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263414622 BCX8\"> and other consumer products. class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/h4><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content et_flex_module\"><p>The carbon molecules found in LFG, in the form of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) or methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>), come from the degradation of organic matter. The molecules were originally absorbed by living organisms as they grew (via photosynthesis), and find their way back into the atmosphere during degradation.\u00a0<strong>Therefore, this organic carbon does not actually increase the quantity of carbon present in the atmosphere<\/strong>\u00a0(short carbon cycle), whereas the carbon emitted by burning fossil fuels does.<\/p>\n<p>As for non-biodegradable carbon contained in synthetic organic materials such as plastics, it remains trapped in the ground. A landfill site therefore acts as a \u201ccarbon sink\u201d, or in other words, a reservoir that contributes to reducing the quantity of carbon in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_2 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_flex_module\"><h4 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Oxygen and nitrogen (O2 and N2)<\/h4><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content et_flex_module\"><p>LFG contains 10% to 30% air. High air concentrations make methane separation much more difficult.
