Veolia Group, a global leader in optimized resource management, and Waga Energy, the European leader in renewable natural gas recovery from landfill waste, have entered a new partnership to recover gas from the Chatuzange-le-Goubet energy-storage center (Drôme). This is the fourth renewable gas injection project run jointly by Waga Energy and Veolia, and the first in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, home to Waga Energy head office.
In June 2022, Waga Energy will commission a WAGABOX® upgrading facility designed to recover 600 m3 of landfill gas generated by the degradation of organic matter contained in waste. The RNG produced will be injected into the GRDF natural gas grid.
The WAGABOX® unit will produce 61,420 MMBtu of renewable natural gas per year and supply 3,000 households, avoiding 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
Waga Energy will build, install and operate the WAGABOX® unit, and also connect it to the GRDF natural gas grid, located 5 km from the site.
Veolia and Waga Energy committed to optimizing green energy production
The energy storage center in the town of Chatuzange-le-Goubet processes 180,000 tonnes of waste per year. Gas produced at the site is currently recovered as electricity by four cogeneration engines. Two of these are to be replaced by the WAGABOX® unit, which will be more energy efficient.
The first WAGABOX® unit installed through the Veolia and Waga Energy partnership has been in operation at the Saint-Palais Veolia site (Cher) since November 2018 and two others are being built at the Le Ham (Manche) and Claye-Souilly (Seine-et-Marne) sites. The WAGABOX® unit in Claye-Souilly will be one of the largest green gas injection units in Europe, producing 409,456 MMBtu of renewable natural gas per year.
