The startup of the facility represents another step forward in the deployment of landfill gas-to-RNG projects across the northeastern United States. By converting landfill gas into a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas, the project contributes to both local energy production and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

Using Waga Energy’s patented WAGABOX® technology, the facility upgrades landfill gas into pipeline-quality Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). Designed to process up to 1,000 scfm of raw biogas, the unit can produce approximately 203,000 MMBtu (60 GWh) of RNG per year.

The RNG produced on-site is injected directly into the local gas grid through a 3-kilometer pipeline connection financed by Waga Energy and Decatur Hills Landfill. By replacing fossil natural gas, the project is expected to avoid more than 15,800 metric tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions per year, according to estimates based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Landfill Gas Energy Benefits Calculator.

The facility is Waga Energy’s eighth RNG production unit in operation in the United States and marks a new step in the company’s continued growth across North America.

In operation since January 2026, this facility marks an important milestone in Casella’s waste recovery strategy. It is also the first WAGABOX® unit capable of processing a flow rate of 3,000 scfm, making it the largest unit deployed to date within the fleet. The installation will produce up to 610,000 MMBtu of renewable gas per year and could avoid more than 47,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually.

The unit is based on the patented WAGABOX® technology, which purifies landfill gas and converts it into RNG. This renewable gas is directly injected into the Valley Energy distribution network, helping to replace fossil natural gas with a local, low-carbon energy source.

This project illustrates the strength of the partnership between Waga Energy and Casella Waste Systems, as well as our shared commitment to the energy transition.

Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) has selected Waga Energy to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the CMCMUA’s Secure Sanitary Landfill in Woodbine. The project marks Waga Energy’s first development in New Jersey, expanding the company’s footprint in the Northeastern US.

Chosen through a competitive RFP process in early 2025, Waga Energy will build, own, and operate the facility under a 20-year agreement. Using its proprietary WAGABOX® technology, the unit will upgrade landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG for injection into the local gas network.

Maximizing Energy Recovery

Designed to process up to 1,000 scfm of landfill gas, the facility is designed to produce approximately 205,000 MMBtu of RNG annually. The project will avoid up to 15,800 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions per year – comparable to eliminating the emissions from around 1.5 million gallons of diesel consumption.

Supporting the Local Community

The CMCMUA Secure Sanitary Landfill serves all sixteen municipalities within Cape May County. While the year-round population of the County is approximately 98,000 residents, the popularity of the County as a vacation destination draws additional crowds over the summer months and increases population to over 750,000. The CMCMUA Secure Sanitary Landfill accepts roughly 180,000 tons of waste annually. The landfill gas is currently utilized for power generation through a CHP engine. The RNG production will maximize the beneficial use of landfill gas generated from the degradation of waste in the landfill, while supplying renewable energy to support the decarbonization of transport.

The WAGABOX® portfolio operated by the group has produced 674 GWh (~2.3 million MMBtu) of RNG (+17% yoy) in 2025, including 245 GWh outside of France (36%). The increase in RNG production is mainly due to the full year effect of the 9 WAGABOX® commissioned in 2024 and to the commissioning of one new unit in the United States (Scott Area). More units are expected to come on line in 2026 in the US and Europe, of which two US units and one in France already commissioned in January.

The group has maintained a high-performance level, achieving an average availability of 95% for units that have been in operation for more than 12 months.

To date, the group operates 35 RNG production units6 in France, Spain, Canada and the United States, offering an installed capacity of 1.9 TWh (6.5 million MMBtu) p.a., and 19 units are under construction in France, Spain, Italy, Canada and the United States, representing an additional installed capacity of 1.8 TWh (6.1 million MMBtu) p.a. Based on these 54 projects, the group estimates signed annual recurring revenues to be around € 215m, compared to € 170m one year ago.

The sales activity has resulted in 6 new contracts signed in 2025 for a capacity of 0.7 TWh (2.4 million MMBtu) p.a., slightly below 2024 (10 projects for 0.8 TWh ie 2.7 million MMBtu p.a.).

In a softer environment on US offtake contracts, Waga Energy remains ideally positioned to scale in the high-growth landfill-to-RNG market. Its proprietary technology and proven execution capabilities provide clear competitive advantages, supporting a trajectory of profitable growth — especially in the U.S. — with projects delivering highly predictable cash flows.

When in operation, the plant is designed to produce about 407,000 MMBtu of RNG per year.

Over the last several decades, Emerald People’s Utility District (EPUD) has generated electricity from the landfill gas at Short Mountain Landfill at a capacity of 3 MW. EPUD selected Waga Energy to generate RNG, replacing the engines at the site. Lane County agreed with EPUDs recommendation: to select Waga Energy, a global leader in the production of renewable natural gas (RNG) from landfills, to upgrade the landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG at Short Mountain Landfill in Eugene for an initial 25year period. The plant will utilize the WAGABOX® technology, developed and patented by Waga Energy. Once operational, it is able to process up to 2,000 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of landfill gas and produce about 407,000 MMBtu (120 GWh) of RNG per year, delivering gas to the local pipeline. The project is expected to reduce up to 31,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually due to the displacement of fossil fuels—equivalent to avoiding the CO₂ emissions from 2.7 million gallons of diesel consumed.

The plant will utilize the WAGABOX® technology, developed and patented by Waga Energy. Once operational, it will be able to process up to 3,000 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of landfill gas and produce over 610,000 MMBtu (180 GWh) of RNG per year, delivering gas to the local pipeline for at least 20 years.

The project is expected to reduce up to 47,500 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually due to the displacement of fossil fuels—equivalent to avoiding the CO₂ emissions from 4.2 million gallons of diesel consumed. By producing pipeline-quality RNG, the project supports the circular economy and reduces reliance on fossil fuels with a local, reliable and renewable source of energy provided to the community.
